Forensic Psychology: A Practical Guide

The presentation will provide attendees with an overview of the practice of forensic psychology and a guide to surviving on the stand. Participants will learn about the interplay between the law and mental health and the foundational tenets of forensic assessment. They also will learn about acts or omissions that could result in legal liability, and general ethical considerations will be discussed. Lastly, participants will be given strategies for hearing/trial preparation and guidelines for effective testimony.

About the Workshop Presenter
Dr. Kara E.A. Marciani has been licensed as a psychologist in Ohio since 2003 and certified as a Diplomate in Forensic Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology/American Board of Forensic Psychology since 2009.
Dr. Marciani is the Director of Forensic Services at the Forensic Psychiatry Center for Western Ohio, a division of Eastway Behavioral Healthcare (Eastway), located in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Marciani also serves as the Forensic Monitor for Greene and the surrounding nine counties. She is a past President of the Association of Ohio Forensic Center Directors.
In addition to her employment at Eastway, Dr. Marciani is the President and Chief Psychologist for Marciani Psychological Services, Inc. (MPS, Inc.). MPS, Inc. provides private professional psychological services to individuals, estates, firms and organizations on a contractual basis. MPS, Inc. clients include Forensic and Mental Health Services, Inc., in Hamilton, Ohio; Netcare Forensic Center in Columbus, Ohio; the Montgomery County Probate Court in Dayton, Ohio; and the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Marciani has presented and conducted workshops on interviewing and communication techniques, mitigation proceedings, treatment planning, and the assessment of psychiatric illness to the Ohio Probate Court Investigators, the Association of Ohio Forensic Psychiatric Center Directors, the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board of Montgomery County, the Tri-County Mental Health Board, and the Mental Health Board of Clark, Greene, and Madison Counties.
